Admission Guidelines

Assessment of a candidate's ability to benefit from the program is based on the individual. Generally, the protocol applies to adults (18 - 59) with acquired brain damage and includes the expectations that:

  1. Medical needs no longer predominate the clinical picture. We understand that some medical issues and medication needs often continue indefinitely.

  2. The candidate does not endanger self, others, or the community. This disqualifies those whose clinical picture is dominated by psychoactive substance abuse, those who are actively suicidal, and those who engage in extremely reckless or violent behavior.

  3. The candidate is capable of independent toileting, bathing, dressing and eating.

  4. Communication skills are functional; communication may take unconventional or non-verbal forms.

  5. Cognitive, developmental and psychological status is such that clinical movement toward goals of increased self-reliance in the home, self and community skills is a reasonable expectation. The candidate is motivated to acquire these skills.

  6. Residents may utilize equipment for mobility, but must be capable of exit from the premises, without equipment, in case of emergency.

  7. It is best if candidates are motivated to utilize this program toward goals of self-reliance and toward their own identified goals. Residents are given the opportunity to assist with the design of their program.
